Ask about Fluoride Varnish

All patients under the age of 18 and adults at risk of tooth decay or with dentine sensitivity will be offered fluoride varnish at their check up or assessment visits. This is a preventive treatment where we brush a high fluoride varnish onto the teeth. It can feel quite sticky for the first few minutes and we advise against eating or drinking for the 30 minutes afterwards to allow the fluoride to soak into the teeth. The Designed to Smile programme offers fluoride varnish applications in some schools. It is safe for children to have fluoride varnish application four times per year but please tell your dentist when your child has last had fluoride varnish in school. If you have an allergy to sticking plasters or if you have been hospitalised with asthma in the last year, this treatment is not suitable. Please remember to tell your dentist of any allergies as part of your medical record. Other preventive treatments are possible for these patient groups so if you or your child are considered high risk for tooth decay and cannot have fluoride varnish, you may be offered a prescription toothpaste or fissure sealants.

To view the national guidelines on preventive treatment and fluoride varnish application, please click here. Fluoride varnish does not replace the need to brush with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day. Research has shown using a fluoride toothpaste is still the most effective way to prevent tooth decay (for more information, click here) but fluoride varnish can help to further reduce your risk of tooth decay (for more information, click here) and the Designed to Smile programme in schools has been successful in reducing children’s tooth decay experience by 15% over ten years.

Focus on Prevention

We all know prevention is better than cure! The best way to prevent dental problems is to minimise sugar intake and maintain good oral hygiene with a fluoride toothpaste. Regular check ups are also necessary to allow us to catch problems early.
At your check up visit, your dentist will let you know how regularly you should have check ups, depending on your risk level for tooth decay, gum disease, tooth wear and oral cancer. This could be anything between 3 months and 2 years.

Failed Appointment Policy

Failed appointments mean other patients can’t be seen by the dentists. You may be deregistered if you fail to attend multiple appointments. Our full failed appointment policy is available here.

Dental Treatment

We provide NHS, membership plan and private dental care. Should you need dental treatment, your dentist will explain all of your treatment options to you, allowing you to make an informed choice about your care.
A number of cosmetic options are also available at our practice on a private basis including whitening, clear aligners, white fillings and aesthetic crowns.
