Emergency Care

As of 1st April 2022, the Welsh Government is changing this instruction so that more routine appointments will be available to try to get through the backlog of patients who have not been seen for more than 2 years. However, this does mean fewer appointments will be available for on the day emergency care. On the day emergency appointments are still available for those with facial swelling, uncontrollable bleeding or traumatic accidents. For less urgent problems like broken teeth or lost fillings, you may have to wait longer for an appointment.

Is my problem an emergency?

We are committed to providing emergency care within 24 hours of your call. Dental emergencies include:

• Traumatic accident
• Dental infection causing facial swelling or fever
• Uncontrollable bleeding after an extraction
• Inability to open mouth (trismus)
• Severe pain that cannot be controlled with local measures
• Broken teeth with pulpal exposure (bleeding from within the tooth)

Other routine dental problems will be addressed as soon as possible, subject to availability of appointments. These include:

• Mild to moderate dental pain
• Loose crowns, bridges or veneers
• Broken or loose-fitting dentures and other appliances
• Broken, loose or lost fillings
• Bleeding gums
